Newsletter Items: 13th October 2019


YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
During October half term [Monday 21st - Friday 25th], our parish will be running a scheme to give children a hot meal at lunch time, as they would receive at school.  In order to do this your help is required.  This will include preparing, cooking, serving and clearing away.  Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated as, without your help, this much needed service may not proceed.  Please sign up using the sign up sheets in both churches.  Please think about helping.

Figures for Last Weekend
There were 72 + 89 = 161 at Mass last weekend.  Thank you for your offering of £309.50 + £227.65 = £537.15.

Hospital
Just a reminder that the Catholic Chaplaincy Team at the Cumberland Infirmary do not receive official notification of the presence of Catholic patients.  Families must let Fr Michael and/or Fr Frank at Warwick Square know if someone is in hospital and in need of a visit.   Holy Communion is taken regularly to patients who are known to the Chaplaincy team.

Festive Choir
The Festival Choir will begin meeting again on Sunday 13th October from 7.00-8.30 pm at Christ The King. We would welcome any new members, young people from Y5 onwards would be especially welcome. 

New Car Park
A new car park for the school, on land behind the Parish Centre, and fencing for the school field [due to safeguarding regulations]  is planned. The date for this to start is mid-October.

RADIANT
A day for young and young at heart Catholics aged 14+ in preparation for Advent.  This will take place on Saturday 30th November at Corpus Christi Catholic High School, Preston.  The day starts at 10.00 am and ends with a Vigil Mass for the First Sunday of Advent at 5.00 pm.  Tickets for school groups are £5 per person and adults £8.00.  Young people under 16 must be part of a school, parish or family group. Certificate in Pastoral Ministry
The Certificate in Pastoral Ministry is a customised Professional Development Programme offered by Loyola University, Chicago in partnership with the Archdiocese of Liverpool and dioceses in the North of England. Modules are six weeks long and are offered  online beginning in February 2020.

There is an information evening at the Education Centre, Balmoral Road, Lancaster on Tuesday 15th October from 7.00 pm until 8.30pm.  Please think about taking part in this course.  Parish sponsorship may be available dependent on numbers.

Dementia - A Shared Experience
Cumbria Partnership NHS Trust runs a session each first Friday of the month when you are invited to share your experience and ideas so as to influence how your local NHS delivers its memory service. This is open to those who experience memory loss and their carers. It takes place between 1.00–3.00pm at Harraby Community Centre. There is free parking and refreshments. 

First Holy Communion 2020
This is planned for Sunday 19th April 2020 [the Second Sunday of Easter]. Preparation will commence after Christmas. Families are expected to attend Sunday Mass each week in the first instance.

Canonisation of Blessed John Henry Newman
The Canonisation of Blessed John Henry Newman will take place on Sunday 13th October in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome.  There is a national novena commencing on Friday 4th October, which we are all invited to participate in. Copies of the Novena will be available in both churches this weekend. A copy of the Novena has been mailed out with the weekly newsletter via Flocknote. There will be a Mass of Thanksgiving for the Canonisation at Christ the King [with Newman School in attendance] on Wednesday 16th October at 11.45 am.

Carpet at St. Margaret Mary
The carpet has been flagged up as a ‘health and safety’ risk during a recent inspection and therefore needs to be lifted.  Any volunteers willing to lift the carpet and place in the skip, please see John Hather.

Annual Retreat

Fr Michael will be on his annual spiritual retreat from the evening of Monday 21st October to the afternoon of Friday 25th October. Please keep him in your prayers.

The Mass this Friday evening is a Mass in the Extra-Ordinary Form.  This is celebrated for the benefit of the deanery at the request of the other priests of the deanery.  It is the custom to receive Holy Communion at these Masses kneeling and directly onto the tongue.

From October to Easter, Fr Paul Harrison will live at St Bede’s rectory, assisting Fr Chris Loughran and Fr Frank Osman in the care of the three parishes: Our Lady of Eden, Cumbrian Martyrs and St Augustine of Hippo.  Fr Chris will have oversight of the three parishes; Fr Frank will serve as chaplain to the hospital. 
Please give your priests all your support and encouragement during this time of transition, not least with your prayers. 

The Sacrament of Confirmation
Bishop Paul Swarbrick is coming to Carlisle in December to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. Will the parents of children/young people in Year 6 and above, who wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation please contact Fr. Michael as soon as possible so that preparation can begin.

The Bishop invites our young people, aged 15-25-ish, to join him on Saturday 14 September from 10.30 am - 2.30 pm at Our Lady’s Catholic College, Lancaster CA1 2RX.

CAFOD - Carlisle Gathering
The CAFOD Harvest Family Fast Day meeting will take place on Monday, 9 September at 7.00 – 8.30 pm (refreshments from 6.45 pm) at New Waterton Hall, Warwick Square.  All are welcome to this gathering to learn about the work of CAFOD.

Vacancy Diocesan Schools Commissioner
The Bishop and Trustees of the Diocese seek to appoint a Diocesan Schools Commissioner. Work is due to commence the week beginning 16th September and set to be completed by 22nd October.  Teachers have been asked not to park in church grounds and parishioners should be able to find space near the Presbytery for weekday Mass.

The Later Morning Weekday Mass

Fr Norman has requested that the Mass be celebrated at 9.30 am rather than 10.00 am.  I’m grateful for his help - please think about attending this celebration of Mass on Wednesdays and Thursdays….use it or lose it…

Clergy Changes in Carlisle 

The Bishop has announced in his Pastoral Letter to the parishes of Carlisle:
Fr Jim Allen is moving to the parishes of Freckleton & Warton. Fr Geoffrey Steel is moving to Garstang. Their last weekend in Carlisle is 28-29 September. 
Fr Michael Docherty will move to a parish closer to Lancaster after Easter, and will be replaced.

The Sunday Mass in the Extra-Ordinary Form  [Latin] will cease after Sunday 1st September. However, Holy Mass on the Second Friday [beginning in October] of each month will be celebrated in the Extra-Ordinary Form. This will be a Low Mass with the Scripture proclaimed in the vernacular [Summorum Pontificum Art. 6]. 

Weekday Mass Times
This week marks the beginning of the new academic year and as promised, an additional workload for Fr Michael in terms of his diocesan responsibilities. To enable him to celebrate Mass prior to leaving for vicariate work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Fr Michael will celebrate Mass at 7.30 am at St. Margaret Mary.  For the next few weeks, there will be no Mass on a Monday - this will resume in October when Fr Michael will take Saturday as his ‘rest day’.  Fr Norman has kindly agreed to celebrate the 10.00 am Mass on Wednesday and Thursday when he can - please support these Masses: the old phrase ‘use it or lose it’ applies here.
