Easter Duties  - A reminder - Because of the central importance of Easter to the Christian faith, the Catholic Church requires that all Catholics who have made their First Communion receive the Holy Eucharist sometime during the Easter season, which lasts through Pentecost Sunday, 50 days after Easter. (They should also take part in the Sacrament of Penance before receiving this Easter communion.) This reception of the Eucharist is a visible sign of our faith and our participation in the Kingdom of God. Of course, we should receive Communion as frequently as possible [when in a state of grace]; this "Easter Duty" is simply the minimum requirement set by the Church.

Caring for your priests who are sick or retired - You know how you worry about your priest’s health or, if something dreadful should happen who would replace him? This is not a new problem. Back in the days of Cardinal Allen of Rossall, near Fleetwood (1532-1594), who himself suffered bouts of ill health, just such worries faced the frightened Catholics in this land. Those were the “Penal Days” of persecution, the days when being a Catholic hurt and there was a price on the head of every fugitive priest. Even if priests could be saved from falling into the hands of their persecutors, they still needed looking after. In the efforts of the Catholics of those days to look after their priests, we find the origins of today’s Lancashire Infirm Secular Clergy Fund. The Fund was first founded in 1672 with a membership of 24 priests. Today, it consists of approximately 440 priest members serving in the Lancaster, Liverpool & Salford dioceses. The object of the Fund is to collect and invest money, the revenue from which helps to support sick and retired priests.  Donations and bequests made by Benefactors ensures remembrance at the monthly Masses celebrated by the priest members and have Masses offered for the repose of their souls when they die.  Specific Masses for named intentions can also be honoured and the minimum donation is £20.00. Please consider becoming a Benefactor and support your priests in sickness and retirement. Forms are on the noticeboard. Thank you.
