Newsletter Items - 3rd August 2014

‘Friends of’ - As well as the Parish Pastoral Council which offers advice to Fr. Michael on strategic matters concerning the parish we’re looking to establish two groups within the parish - Friends of St. Margaret Mary and Friends of Christ the King - a willing band of parishioners who will meet to organise social events in each part of the parish and give a hand with the day to day running of our two churches.  If you would like to get involved, please contact Paul Lovell for St. Margaret Mary or Greg Smith for Christ the King.

Redecoration at Christ the King - It is hoped that redecoration will begin in October.  An application will be made to the Diocesan Trustees in the near future to enable this necessary work to begin.  We have so far raised just over £5,000 of the £8,500 anticipated cost.  A box for voluntary donations will be available from next week at the back of Christ the King Church.

Sacrament of Confirmation - Names should be forwarded to Fr. Michael as soon as possible.  There will be a gathering of candidates at Christ the King on Thursday 25th September at 7.00 pm.

LIFE in Carlisle - This newly formed group needs your help. We are looking for any baby clothes and/or equipment to provide help to many families in our area who are struggling to provide for their babies. Most of these items cost less than £1 or could be second hand but in very good condition. A Collection Box can be found in Church together with some examples of what is needed and your parish contact point. Thank you for your support.

Catholic Funerals - From Our Lady of Eden’s Newsletter but worth a thought “A word of advice - If you wish to have a Requiem Mass (which is the best way for the conclusion of ones life) celebrated for your funeral, it is important to let relatives know this, preferably in your will. Funeral arrangements are often made by well meaning relatives who are unaware of this side of Catholic practice.”

Assisted Dying Bill - Please write to a member of the House of Lords. The Bill to legalise "assisted dying" - meaning assisted suicide - will be debated in the House of Lords on 18th July 2014. There will be a free vote because it is not government legislation. If passed, this Bill would place vulnerable people at serious risk. Especially if you have direct experience of caring for a dying person, either as a family member or as a health or social care professional, please write before 18th July to a Peer to tell them your views. For more information, including details of how to write to a Peer, please visit www.catholicchurch.org.uk/assisted-dying-bill. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO WRITE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BUT BEFORE 18TH JULY.

What we already knew perhaps, but no less excellent! - We are delighted to announce that our parish primary school has been judged ‘Outstanding’ [the highest grade possible] by the Diocese.  Parishes will find a copy of the report available to take home this weekend.  The inspectors said “St Margaret Mary’s is an outstanding Catholic school, where the dedication and drive of the headteacher, staff and governors leads to continuous improvement and excellent outcomes for all pupils.” Congratulations to all involved.  The pupils recited the Te Deum in thanksgiving at Mass on Wednesday! We believe more ‘Good News!’ is on the way - watch this space!

Sacrament of Confirmation - names should be forwarded to Fr. Michael as soon as possible.  There will be a gathering of candidates at Christ the King on Thursday 25th September at 7.00 pm.

Newman School Chapel - The chapel of our secondary school, Newman, has been undergoing gradual renovation over the last year. A new altar has been built to replace the ‘table’ currently in use. The Bishop will be coming to consecrate the new altar on 14th July in the morning. On the afternoon of the same day, there will be a Mass in the school at 3.30pm to celebrate the restoration of the chapel to which all are invited. Please come along to support this important part of our Catholic mission in the city of Carlisle.

‘Eucharistic Services’ Bishop Campbell has written to all parishes reminding us that he has not given permission for such ‘services’ in the past and that he will only give permission in the future for exceptional circumstance and even then only for a Sunday [for example due to the the sudden illness of a priest].   The celebration of such ‘services’ in the past was on a trial basis [for want of a better phrase].  He hopes we will be able to develop greater use of the Liturgy of the Hours.  There will a be a meeting to discuss greater use of the Liturgy of the Hours [which is celebrated already at Christ the King] in September.
