Newsletter Items: 24th March 2019

Lenten Course - Word on Fire
Lent is here and we’re sending out a series of short videos (once per week) by Bishop Robert Barron, on the subjects connected to Lent, to help in our preparation of Easter. The videos are short and there are questions for you to consider. If you know of someone (whether religious or not!) who is yet to sign up, or you feel would benefit from learning more about Christ’s Church, please direct them to https://app.flocknote.com/StHerberts. Then ask them to sign up under Sacred Heart of Jesus parish.

Lenten Stations and Hunger Lunches
Christ the King
These will take place each Friday of Lent, beginning on 8th March, from 12.00 noon at Christ The King. We will again, this year, be supporting Mary’s Meals, an organisation working to provide a daily meal for school children throughout the world. This Charity is active in 18 countries, supporting 1.5 million children.

St. Margaret Mary
There will be Lenten Lunches in the Parish Centre following Stations of the Cross at 12.00 noon at St. Margaret Mary beginning Tuesday 12th March.

Taize Worship
On Thursday 28th March, we are holding a Taize style evening of worship and quiet reflection at 7.00 pm at Christ The King Church. Please make every effort to attend and maybe bring someone else along.

Festival Choir
The festival choir meets to prepare for celebrating Easter on Sunday evenings at 7.00 pm. The Triduum will be celebrated at St Margaret Mary this year so rehearsals will be there. Please consider joining us, everyone is welcome especially the young and young at heart!

St. Margaret Mary School Passion Play
On the evening of Spy Wednesday [the Wednesday of Holy Week - 17th April] pupils from St. Margaret Mary will perform a Passion Play at St. Margaret Mary Church. Please make a note in your diary to come along!

SVP Food Parcels
St Margaret Mary SVP will be distributing food parcels  before Easter to local families in need. We hope to deliver parcels during the week of Monday 25th March. Tinned meat and fruit are especially welcome. Please check ‘best before dates’ on all items. Thank you for your continued support.

Offertory and Figures
Mass attendance: 56 + 75 + 102  = 233
Offertory Contribution £472 + £291 = £763. Many thanks.

Carlisle Food Bank
Food items most needed: tins of meat (mince, hotdogs, casseroles and stews, ham, corned beef), tins of fish, tins of fruit, tins of rice pudding, packets of custard, dried potato, dried pasta or rice meals, multipack cereals, UHT milk, biscuits, dried packets of sauce mix.
Please avoid bringing soup and beans - there is a stockpile of these items. Tins of meat are especially in need.

Mass Intentions
Just a gentle reminder: if you have a specific date you would like to keep, then please provide plenty of notice, i.e. at least one month in advance. Fr Michael does his best to allocate Mass intentions for a specific date when requested but sometimes these dates have already been allocated.  In those cases, he allocates as near a date as possible.

First Holy Communion
First Holy Communion will be celebrated in the Parish on Sunday 28th April 2019 [the Second Sunday of Easter]. Catechesis continues on Thursday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Primary School.

Diocesan Directory 2019
The new diocesan directory is available in the sacristy of both churches - price £3.50.

First Friday Fish & Chips
The next First Friday Fish and Chips will be held on Friday 5th April after Mass & Devotions [approx. 8.00 pm]. The cost is £6.00 per person. Pre-booking is required for catering purposes. Please see Paul Lovell or Peter Osborne to book your place.

Please Support Our Parish Centre
The bar helps offset any cost to the parish of maintaining the parish centre for parish activities.  Even though it is Lent, why not drop in, for a ‘medicinal’ beer or glass of wine to support the centre. A group of parishioners venture to the centre after Mass on a Friday evening - why not join them?

Readers and Eucharistic Ministers for The Triduum
Sign up sheets will shortly be available for both churches. Could you please indicate those times when you will be available during the Triduum which, this year, is being celebrated in St Margaret Mary. Thanks.

Pilgrimage to Carfin Grotto - National Marian Shrine for Scotland
The Catenians invite all parishioners to come along on this pilgrimage on Saturday 4th May 2019 leaving Our Lady & St. Joseph Church, Warwick Square, Carlisle at 9.30 am and St. Augustine Church, Scotland Road, Carlisle at 9.40 am.  Return by 6.00 pm.
Cost £10.00 per person.  Children under 15 free.  Please sign up on sheets in churches and indicate whether you are taking a packed lunch or using the cafe.

Lent Talk at St. Catherine’s, Penrith
The Eucharist foreshadowed in the Old Testament by Canon Luiz Ruscillo on Thursday 28 March 2019 at 7.30 pm in the Haydock Centre, behind St Catherine’s Church, Drovers Lane, Penrith, CA11 9EL. All Welcome. Tea and Coffee available.

End of Term

Our schools break up for their Spring Holiday this Friday [the local authority have brought the holiday away from Easter for some reason].  We wish them well and look forward to welcoming them back in Holy Week.
