Bishop Paul Swarbrick has sent a Pastoral Letter launching a period of consultation for the parishes of Carlisle on a proposal to unite the parishes into one new parish. Copies of the letter are available to be taken away.
Two gatherings in the parish to offer opportunities for discussion are:
Parish Pastoral Council
Fr Michael will next meet on Monday 24th March at 7.00 pm.
Meeting of Parishioners
There will be a public meeting for parishioners in the Parish Centre at St. Margaret Mary on Tuesday 24th March at 7.30 pm. There will be no Matthew Course that evening. Please save the date in your diary and make every effort to come along.
You are also able to write directly to the Bishop - he includes his address in the Pastoral Letter.
Lent in the Parish
Stations of the Cross
St. Margaret Mary’s - Tuesdays at 11.30 am Christ the King - Fridays at 12.00 noon.
Soup lunches will be provided on Tuesdays in the Parish Centre and on Fridays at Christ the King after Stations of the Cross. This year the lunches will support CAFOD.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Repent and believe the Good News! Please make a special effort during Lent to revisit the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The festival choir gathers to prepare for the Easter liturgies on Sunday evenings [beginning this evening] at St. Margaret Mary from 7.00 - 8.30 pm. Children from Year 5 and above are welcome to come along.
The Easter Triduum and Holy Week
Palm Sunday will be celebrated at Christ the King this year with a single parish Mass at 10.00 am.
Holy Thursday, Mass of the Lord’s Supper, will be at 7.00 pm, Good Friday, the commemoration of the Passion at 3.00 pm and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday at 8.00 pm. These will be held at St. Margaret Mary. On Easter Sunday, Masses will be as normal.
SVP Food Parcels
We will soon be delivering our Easter food parcels to local families in need. Thank you for your contributions so far. We aim to deliver parcels the week beginning 23rd March. Tinned fruit and meat are especially welcome. Please check 'best before' dates before donating. Thank you for your continued support.
Matthew: The King and His Kingdom
This course, produced by Ascension Press, will continue this Tuesday. This would be particularly useful for all readers in the parish.
Rededication of England as the Dowry of Mary
On Sunday, 29th March, the Bishops of England, led by Cardinal Nichols will rededicate England as the Dowry of Mary. This is a significant event for our country and we are asked to prepare well for this event, particularly by praying the Angelus each day at 12.00 noon. Our parish will celebrate an evening Novena to Our Lady in the form of Eucharistic Adoration, sermon and recitation of the Holy Rosary from Friday 20th March until Sunday 29th March at 6.00 pm. The Solemnity of the Annunciation will be celebrated with particular dignity on the evening of Wednesday 25th March to enable as many parishioners to attend as possible.
Figures for last Sunday
At Mass 85 + 134 = 219. Thank you for your offertory contribution of £234.90 + £299.40 = £534.30.
Just a reminder that the Catholic Chaplaincy Team at the Cumberland Infirmary do not receive official notification of the presence of Catholic patients. Families must let Fr Frank at Warwick Square know if someone is in hospital and in need of a visit. Holy Communion is taken regularly to patients who are known to the Chaplaincy team.
To receive the parish newsletter by e-mail, please sign up to the deanery Flocknote initiative. Visit: https://app.flocknote.com/StHerberts. Then sign up under the parish with which you associate.
Fr Michael would welcome requests for Masses to be celebrated for a particular intention. There is one Mass this week without a 'particular intention’… all requests on the books have been allocated.
Carlisle Food Bank
Please continue to support the Foodbank collection at Christ the King. Please note that food left at St. Margaret Mary is for the ‘SVP Food Parcels' rather than the ‘Food Bank’.
Dementia Friendly Coffee Morning
This takes place on Friday morning 10.30 am - 12.00 noon in the Parish Centre. It is organised by St. Margaret Mary Primary School. Cost is £1 with proceeds going to the Alzheimers Society.
The best way of protection from a virus is for everyone to use universal good hygiene, which will effectively disrupt spread of the virus. We should be doing this all the time for ‘flu:
- Catch it - sneeze into a paper tissue
- Bin it - bin the tissue
- Kill it - wash your hands with soap and water
Do not touch your face unless you’ve washed your hands.
Anyone with cold or flu symptoms is to refrain from receiving communion from the Chalice and receive the Host on the hand only.
Off to Rome
Please note Fr Michael’s trip to Rome has been cancelled. However, he has decided to continue to take leave this week so, in an emergency, please contact the clergy at Warwick Square 521509.
